Stepping onto the TEDx stage changed the way people saw me—and how I saw myself

Imagine it:

Hearing your name announced.

The crescendo of applause as you step out from behind the curtain and into the spotlight.

The hush that falls over the theater as everyone waits to hear what you’re about to say.

You take a deep breath, and begin.

Stepping onto the stage at a TEDx event will be one of the most exciting moments of your career.

You get the chance to share your story, not just to a room full of people, but with the many hundreds, thousands, maybe millions of people who will see it online, all over the world.

Now picture what happens AFTER you give your TEDx talk:

..You post your TEDx talk to your Facebook page and get hundreds of likes and shares. ...You put it your website, in your LinkedIn profile, slip it into your slide deck presentation—and just like that!—instant cred.

...You get an email from an event organizer who thinks you’d be perfect for their annual conference.

...You’re invited to contribute to a popular blog.

...A new prospect pings you to set up a consult.

...A literary agent reaches out to ask if you’ve ever considered doing a book on the topic.

...Maybe your ex reappears and wants to catch up (this could be good news, or bad news. Only you know).

...And all the while, emails and tweets come in from all over the globe about how you changed their minds and lives forever.

The TED name has considerable cache.

Presenting at one of the many independently organized TEDx events all over the country and the world can do a lot for you and your career, such as:

  • Open doors for you as a speaker
  • Help you reach a bigger audience
  • Drive more attention for your business and brand
  • Maybe even lead to a book deal!

TEDx can be a game changer.

(It was for me—and it will be to you, too.)

Get your talk out of your head—and into the world.

My TEDx talk changed everything.

The opportunity to apply came just a month later, and it came the way, in fact, a lot of other speaking gigs had for me—because someone else dropped out!

So be it. I threw my hat in the ring for a highly coveted slot in the largest TEDx event in the country, TEDxKansasCity.

And trust me, it was not like someone handed me that talk. I was in the running—and there were plenty of other contenders.

I set my sights on TEDx.

On a beautiful Sunday in the summer of 2015, I bought a book on how to do a TED talk, and read half of it on my Kindle in a beach chair in Central Park.

And I got both excited...and depressed. Of course, I was dying to do a TED talk. But look at these people! Simon Sinek, Brene Brown, Kelly McGonigal, Amy Cuddy. They’re superstars!

I didn’t have a bestselling book or letters after my name. I didn’t work for a major university or head up research at NASA.

I mean, how could I ever get a TED talk? Who would listen to me? Did I have anything special to say?

I’m betting you feel the same way.

Does this sound like you?

  • You have an idea for a talk.
  • You have a story you want to share.
  • You want to speak to a bigger audience.
  • You want to be seen as an expert, an innovator.
  • You want to help people learn from the lessons you learned.
  • You’re incredibly passionate about your topic or idea.
  • You truly want to motivate and inspire people.
  • You want the prestige and exposure.
  • You’ve been told you should give one!

These are all great reasons! And it certainly was a gamechanger for me.

I was given a few minutes of the TEDx organizer’s time on a Skype call, and he asked me, “The question is, do you have a TED talk in you?”

I knew I did—I had several!

I talked through a few ideas, including this one: How I believed searching for your passion was the wrong way to approach your life. And that we had it all backwards, especially when searching for a career.

That’s the one that got me the gig! The idea, and how I presented it, and myself, is ultimately what closed the deal.

(By the way, I didn’t close it on that first call. It’s not that easy! I worked on my pitch and topic every night and met with him six days in a row before he knew I was the right pick.)

My TEDx talk, “Stop Searching for Your Passion,” has earned more than 1.8 million views to date. I can’t even believe it myself.

That TEDx talk has led to many speaking opportunities at conferences like How Design Live, BlogHer, as well as corporate events at Fortune 500 companies like Blackstone.

It has raised my profile as a speaker and expert—as well as my fee. Not to mention brought me more attention, more cred, and more business.

It even led to another TEDx talk! A year later, I was invited to present at TEDxStLouisWomen.

Plus, I get emails from people all over the world, every day, telling me how I helped them see their lives and choices differently. I gotta tell you, it feels pretty damn great.

I’ve helped other people land TEDx talks, too.

As a brand and media consultant, I’ve been working 1:1 with clients for years, helping them figure out what they’re trying to say and how to say it—on TV, radio, on their websites, and on stage.

I help them position their brands and coax out their most powerful messaging. It’s my jam.

“Give a TED talk” is pretty high up on a lot of people’s bucket lists. And I have helped other people create, pitch, and land their TEDx talks, too.

(I even worked with a woman who’s terrified of public speaking, and dreading an upcoming keynote...but yet she says she’s dying to give a TEDx talk! Go figure.)

I’m thrilled to say I’ve helped many people come up with, develop, pitch, and deliver their own TEDx talks.

Including

  • A hotshot Boston architect from a major firm who had no idea what he was going to talk about. He delivered his talk on the future of the office workspace at a TEDx audition show, and won a spot at TEDxFenway.
  • A cultural critic and professor of media studies at Duke University who needed help honing her topic, the true meaning of the selfie, which she presented at TEDxDurham to great acclaim.
  • A noted psychologist and marital therapist whom I helped develop, focus, and pitch a talk on why romantic partners fight—which he successfully gave at TEDxKC.
  • A former personal trainer-turned-motivational speaker who had an idea of what she wanted to say, but was stuck in a rut. I helped her see her original topic (why there’s such a thing as too strong) in a new way (why ignoring your own limits can cost you) and created a fantastic pitch that’s currently being considered.

I can help you as well.

Here's what people are saying.

“From germinating the idea to its pitch-perfect performance, Terri is masterful at ferreting out exactly what it is that you contribute to the world and naming it—which is the stuff Ted talks are made of. There isn’t anyone else I’d trust with my public talks.”

-Negar Mottahedeh, PhD, Professor of Media Studies, Duke University

“If you want to move the masses with your words and ideas, I cannot recommend Terri’s coaching and expertise highly enough. She’s one-of-a-kind and truly a genius at what she does!”

-Selena Soo, creator of Impacting Millions

“Terri is fast on her feet and knows what she's doing. If it were not for Terri, I doubt that I would've done the TEDx talk. In fact I know I wouldn't have.”

-Stan Tatkin, PsyD, couples therapist and author of Wired for Love

Why should you join me?

I know what you’re thinking. “Yes! I want to do this!” and then “But...um...can I really do this? For reals?” Short answer: Yes! Here are some answers to the questions I get often.

How do I know if this program is right for me?

Does the idea of creating a TEDx talk—or any talk—excite you, even if it makes you a little nervous? Great. Then you’re in the right place. Here are some other ways to know if this course is a fit.

This course is for you if you:

  • Feel like you have a message to say but aren’t quite sure yet how to say it
  • Want to give a TEDx talk for reals! If not now, someday!
  • Are craving support, feedback, accountability

What if I don’t know what my idea is yet?

That’s ok! In fact, the #1 reason people tell me they haven't given a TEDx talk is that they’re not sure how to select or narrow down their topic. That’s exactly what this course is designed to help you do: identify your key idea so that you can deliver a talk that changes minds.

Should I take the Masterclass or Elite level?

Both tracks give you access to top-notch training with live calls, Q&A, worksheets, resources, and guides—all you need to tackle, focus, and pitch your TEDx talk (or any talk you’d like to give!).

The difference is really a matter of how much support, feedback, and accountability you’d like. There are a few advantages of the 30-Day elite:

  • The opportunity to present your idea on a live call and get laser feedback and coaching from me.
  • Access to the Elite-only FB page. In addition to the community feedback and support from the group, I will provide you with regular prompts and exercises to help you refine your talk, answer questions, and facilitate meaningful discussion around your ideas.
  • Bonus audios of interviews I’ve done with organizers for TEDx and other events—so you can hear first hand what they’re looking for in speaker talent, plus other industry insights that give you a leg up as you prepare your talk.

Elite is ideal if you’re serious about upping your speaking game faster with targeted feedback and support. But either way, you can go at your own pace and reference the teachings at any time.

How does the 15-minute laser coaching session work?

Elite participants will each get a powerful mini-session on a live call.

Here’s how it works: You will submit your idea to me in advance, and I will prepare feedback to deliver on the call so we make the most of our time. You’ll do a short pitch for your talk on the group call, and then we will have a discussion about how to shape and refine your idea. Fifteen minutes may not seem like a long time, but you’d be surprised! You’ll leave that call with a fresh perspective and steps to take next.

What can I learn in the course that I can’t get from just watching TED talks?

Actually, there’s a lot to learn beyond what happens on stage! In this course, you’ll discover the process for creating and developing a talk of your own, which isn’t something you can necessarily get by watching someone else’s finished product.

Think of it this way: Is watching a movie all you need to do in order to write a screenplay? Sure, it helps, but you probably want more guidance. This course breaks down the process and gives you a framework for turning your ideas and stories into a powerful talk. Plus, as part of the course, you’ll get a curated list of some of the most notable TED talks, plus insights as to what you can take away from them.

How do I know I’ll get a TEDx talk after I take this course?

While no one can guarantee that you will land a TEDx booking, what I can promise you is that as a result of this course, you’ll be in a far better position to pitch a talk that gets attention.

I’ll teach you what TEDx organizers are looking for, and how to capture the essence of your talk in a few words—plus how to adapt your idea to a range of TEDx themes so you can start applying now!

I don’t have a book. Does that matter?

Not at all! There are plenty of TEDx speakers who don’t have books. Don’t let that stop you! In fact, giving a TEDx talk can help you crystallize idea and give you the focus you need to create and pitch a book, too!

What if I’m not an authority on anything?

Actually, you are! You’re an expert on your experience, your life, your perspective. You don’t need to be an award-winning scientist or bestselling author to create and deliver a powerful TEDx talk.

Do I need connections at TEDx to get booked?

The good news is that the most important part of your TEDx application is your idea. You don’t need to have any special insider connections to pitch and land your idea.

I’m not sure I’m ready for TEDx. Is it still worth it for me to take the course?

Yes! If you love the idea of creating and delivering your signature talk—at events, conferences, workshops, or other venues, join us! You don’t have to feel ready to take the TED stage tomorrow. What you’ll learn in this course will apply to any talks you give, and help you focus your efforts to escalate your speaking career, no matter where you are in it.

You really can do this on the TED stage and on ANY stage! Here are a few of the places I've leveraged these same skills:
